The UC Irvine Falling Leaves Foundation Medical Innovation Building is a 215,000-square-foot, six-story interdisciplinary research facility designed to advance basic, translational, and clinical research. Located within UCI’s Health Sciences District, the building brings together 13 high-impact research programs and features a vivarium, wet and dry laboratories with supporting technical spaces, research offices, meeting rooms, classrooms, and collaborative areas. Designed to promote cross-disciplinary interaction and accelerate “bench to bedside” discovery, the facility is one of the largest interdisciplinary discovery and translational research hubs on the West Coast.

CMI served as the mechanical subcontractor for the design-build project, supporting the specialized environmental and infrastructure requirements of the building’s laboratory, vivarium, research, instructional, and office spaces. The facility was designed as a flexible, high-performance research environment capable of supporting a wide range of biomedical disciplines and evolving research needs. The completed building achieved LEED Platinum certification, reflecting UCI’s emphasis on energy-efficient and sustainable research facilities.
